Perform semi-skilled work assisting in the proper and effective operation of power plant boilers and steam turbine generators.

Essential Job Functions
  • Continuously monitor the operation of high-pressure boilers and steam turbine generators. Take and record hourly readings on various temperatures and pressures related to boilers, turbines, and auxiliary equipment. Make adjustments as needed.

  • Make periodic checks of force draft fan, feed water pumps, regulatory valves, water level, water flow, and other parts/functions to ensure efficient operation; make adjustments as needed.

  • Make periodic checks of cooling towers, cooling fans, debris screens, and ice buildup.

  • Check steam traps, air valves, reservoir levels, motors and motor bearings, cooling water, and hydrogen coolers, and make adjustments as needed.

  • Pull fire and remove ash from coal-fired boilers with hot water.

  • Assist in the startup and shutdown of operating units.

  • Check and clean ash bed.

  • Participate in the construction, repair, replacement, and maintenance of generating units.

Ancillary Job Functions
  • Keep work area clean and free of clutter/debris. Inspect area daily for potential safety hazards.

  • Assist higher-level operator(s) in operation of boiler and turbine units as needed.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered
  • Associate or technical degree in Industrial Technology, Electricity, or related field preferred.

  • Minimum of one year of experience related to power production activities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position
  • Some knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools, materials, and equipment utilized for maintenance and repair of power generation equipment.

  • Ability to read and understand digital and analog gauges to effectively verify proper operation of equipment.

  • Some knowledge of safety standards and precautions connected with power production.

  • Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safe work practices connected with high-pressure steam and high-voltage electrical work.

  • Ability to safely use and maintain bench/hand tools and equipment associated with power production.

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with others.

Work Environment – Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job
  • May be required to work in confined spaces or high/dangerous places.

  • May be exposed to wet/humid conditions, inclement outdoor weather, vibration, extreme temperatures, mechanical oils, airborne particles/fumes, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, potentially hazardous or cancer-causing agents/chemicals, or loud noise levels.

  • Must be able to feel attributes of objects, grasp, push, stand, walk, bend, twist, reach with hands/arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb/balance, operate mechanical equipment, and move up and down from/to sitting position on the floor.

  • Regularly required to have repetitive wrist, hand, and/or finger movement.

  • Must have clarity of vision, three-dimensional vision, precise hand-eye coordination, and ability to identify and distinguish colors.

  • May be required to lift up to 100 pounds.

  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.

Hours/Days
Shift Operator – 12 Hour Shift Work on rotating days (7am-7pm)

Relief Operator – Day shift Monday to Friday (7am-3:30pm) with fill in on 12 hour day and night shift as needed.

Starting Salary
$38,168 to $48,714 annually, Minimum to Midpoint, Commensurate on experience and training
